Which medication is contraindicated with unfractionated heparin (UFH)?

  1. Vancomycin

  2. Daptomycin

  3. Telavancin

  4. Doxycycline

The correct answer is: Telavancin

Background Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is a blood thinner used to prevent and treat blood clots. It works by preventing the formation of blood clots in the body. Vancomycin, daptomycin, and doxycycline are all antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Telavancin is also an antibiotic in the same class as vancomycin, called glycopeptide antibiotics. Both vancomycin and telavancin have been found to increase the risk of bleeding when used with UFH. This is because vancomycin and telavancin can also interfere with the body's ability to form blood clots, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Daptomycin and doxycycline, on the other hand, do not have this effect on blood clotting and are not contraindicated with UFH. However, it is important to always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medications, as drug interactions can occur.
